Artist Message
Alanna received an honours degree in Fine Art History and Comparative Religion from U. of T., but abandoned all ideas of becoming an academic when she discovered the squiggly drawings of Egon Schiele. The Viennese artist's work inspired her to develop her own style which has since been described as whimsical with a ‘Paris in the 1950s’ sensibility. Alanna's clients include: The New York Times, Chronicle Books, The Four Seasons Hotel, The Atlantic Monthly, VISA, Little, Brown and Co., Azure Magazine, and Canada Post. She has received recognition from both Communication Arts and Applied Arts Magazine. In addition to producing illustrations digitally using Photoshop, Alanna also creates silk screened prints the good old fashioned way with ink and squeegee! Alanna draws inspiration from an enormous 'creative soup' which includes: Andy Warhol, Designers Judy Ross, John Derian, Andy Spade, and Marc Jacobs, Singers Rufus Wainwright and Beck, and writer and filmmaker Don McKellar; all of whom she feels bring both a sense of intelligence and wit to their work. (much needed in uptight Toronto!). She is also eternally grateful to : Steve Jobs for inventing the Macintosh, Jet Fuel cafe for waking her up each morning, and CBC radio and NPR for keeping her company each day as she works. |
