Artist Message
A native New Yorker, former ballet dancer and rock musician, Ali Smith is a photographer who works extensively in the publishing field, shooting book covers for major publishing houses internationally. She's also shot advertising jobs for A&E Television, Rimmel London Makeup, Cosmopolitan Magazine, and The Blue Man Group. Her first book of photography, "Laws of the Bandit Queens", was released by Random House and has been called "...this generation's quintessential homage to strong, smart, groundbreaking women." Bestselling author of "The Liars Club" and portrait subject, Mary Karr said of her photography, Ali Smiths photos show artists both as they want to be seen and as they are. That takes a brilliant eye. Ali has been profiled on Oxygen television, spoken as a guest author at Barnes and Noble bookstores in New York and L.A., guest lectured at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York, and a documentary about her work is currently in progress. She received a grant from The Puffin Foundation for her work photographing incarcerated mothers and children (Photo essay published by Bust Magazine in 2007), she currently teaches photography to teen girls on NYC's lower east side, and her work has been included in solo and group exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin and London. |
