Description: On January 17, 2010 my younger brother left home without word or warning. Most of his clothes and possessions remained, and his room still appeared to be lived in. Months went by before anyone, friends or family, knew where he was or that he was even safe. His notes, clothes, poetry, journal, miscellaneous objects and the images on his wall were nearly all we had to remember him by. The events and issues surrounding and leading up to his sudden disappearance inspired this series of photographs entitled Home. Artist: Shane Welch |

However, the special meaning of “emptiness” varies with context and specific religious or cultural tradition that is used. Nothing is not anything, just does not exist. Nothing is a linguistic representation of what is thought to be the absence of everything. The emptiness and nothingness are directly linked to agoraphobia. But what is agoraphobia? It is an anxiety disorder, often motivated by fear of having a panic attack in an environment that there is no easy means of escape. As a result, sufferers of agoraphobia, avoiding public places and / or unknown locations, particularly large spaces such as shopping centers or halls, where there are few places to "hide". "HAVANA PUNK!"
Description: HAVANA PUNK! Havana. Cuba. 2010. What’s going on today with teens in Cuba, during the Raul regime? I had the chance to meet a group of punks in Havana, become their friend, and meet their families. After spending considerable time with them ,I decided to tell their story. Nothing has changed since Fidel resigned. I was told the situation is worse in many aspects. Raul is not a politician like his brother. He has a military background, and this affects his government, which from many points of view is more conservative. At the same time, things are moving slowly in Cuba, particularly in Havana. In the capitol city it’s easier to perceive changes in the social context. For Cubans this is a period of “waiting”. People know that something is going to happen, although not in the short term. In this social environment the best way to catch these early changes is by observing young people. They meet in groups, looking for identity, like many others across the world. They are almost 15 or 20 years late in terms of culture, trends, music and fashion comparing to western countries. In Cuba, mobile phone use is not prevalent , and very expensive. The only thing on television is programming broadcasted by a government TV network. Internet connection is slow, and almost only available in hotels. Most of the time it’s down. For young people, the only way to share information, music, movies and books is through USB pens. They copy MBs of data from foreign tourists’ HDs. There are a few places where these groups gather, both in the city and in the suburbs. There, they dance, perform, and organize concerts and competitions. I’m not referring to famous Cuban artists, musicians, dancers or intellectuals, but to everyday kids. I witnessed great social dissatisfaction and desire for change. Teens do not talk much about politics, but it is clear they understand the Revolution has failed them in the long run. They just want to be like other young people overseas. Artist: Livio Mancini |
