THE ULTIMATE SOURCE FOR CREATIVE TALENT

Hollenbach and Spadafora in Group Show

Event dates: Jul 10, 2012 - Aug 23, 2012

Description: Up From The Deep, an exhibition of work by fourteen artists who probe the fathoms of memory, dreams, myth and states of being, will be on view at TNC Gallery in the East Village at 155 First Avenue from July 10- August 23, 2012. The show will include work by Rupa DasGupta, Jeff Faerber, Lars Henkel, David Hollenbach, Jeremy Holmes. Reuben Negron, Buddy Nestor, Ipek Sen, Andrew Smenos, Fedele Spadafora, Victoria Selbach, Barren Storey, Zoe Williams, Timothy Wilson, and Rusty Zimmerman. Curated by artist Jeff Faerber, Up From the Deep will present contemporary works exploring subterranean themes in a wide range of media, from photography to painting to fabric sculpture.

Up From The Deep includes paintings by Fedele Spadafora who works in acrylic on paper to build depictions of folk tales. His work First Communion, 2012, investigates the territory between hyperrealism and the reconstruction of imagery, conjuring faded memories deeply rooted in an immigrant past. Andrew Smenos creates hand stitched fabric animals including the donkey of In Hi-Ho Silver Lining, 2012, then paints their portraits in oil on canvas bringing contrasting metaphors to memories of childhood. Buddy Nestor's work has been categorized as "grotesque" art, a subgenre of Dark Art and Dark Surrealism. He strives for an antagonistic form of dissolving humans with a demand to characterize the human as an artificial and dissoluble semblance of extreme disintegration that holds its own credibility in acrylic and charcoal works including Katie Perdue, 2012.

The artists in Up From The Deep explore memory, dreams, and myth, probe psychic undercurrents and emotional states, and presents works that evoke the dark moods that befit our time.

Exhibits runs from July 10th - August 23rd, 2012
