On his blog, illustrator Sean Qualls recently discussed the challenges and benefits of not knowing what will happen every step of the way from when an illustration is in its idea-stage until it is a finished piece. He also explained that although the finished product sometimes turn out very close to how he first imagined it, other times the result comes as a happy surprise. Starting with a piece made a few years back, Sean displayed a perfect example of the latter by showing a series of illustrations and how one influenced the other until finally resulting in an image that brought him both surprise and satisfaction.
