Kansas City-based commercial photographer David Morris is joining the growing list of local businesses, artists, and galleries moving to the city‚s Crossroads district. Morris purchased the building located at 2131 Washington for the home of his new studio. The structure, originally built in 1929, was most recently occupied by Indigo Wild, a soap manufacturing company.
„It just makes sense for my studio to be located in the Crossroads district", said David Morris. „It's not only closer to downtown agencies that I work with, but it also gives my clients better access to restaurants, hotels and the Kansas city art scene".
Morris is working with award-winning Ju´´nk Architects to renovate both the interior and exterior of the building. Plans include shifting the main entrance from the west to south side with more of a „store front‰ appearance. Additionally, windows on the west side of the building will be replaced and left exposed to allow for natural lighting in the photography studio. Morris will have one of the few studios in the Midwest that utilizes in-studio natural lighting.
The interior is being given a complete overhaul and will incorporate a contemporary look with skylights and exposed brick walls. The building will also be wired for internet and wireless access to assist in the digital imaging process. One room will be designed specifically as a high-tech suite where computers and ink jet printers will be set up for photo re-touching and printing.
Much of Morris‚ work includes shooting food photography. With that in mind, architect Galen Lif is creating a high-end commercial kitchen with all the warmth and comfort of home. The kitchen design is intended to capture the attention of clients and guests when they first enter the room.
„The kitchen plays such an important role in David‚s work so there will be a lot of emphasis on this part of the studio", said Lif. „We are in the final design stages, but the kitchen will feature a wrap-around appearance with a warm traditional look similar to an upscale home. At the same time, it will have sort of a movie set feel to it."
The building renovation is expected to be completed in October. Morris will relocate from his current studio on Merriam Lane in Kansas City, Kan. at that time.
