Jason Dailey’s Award-winning Photo Of The “Prairie-Chicken Dance”

May 24, 2016

Jason Dailey’s photograph of Native artist and dancer, Isaiah Stewart, for last spring’s Lawrence Magazine cover story was recently announced as the winner of the 2016 Magazine Portrait of the Year during the Great Plains Journalism Awards. The story, written by Katherine Dinsdale, which is about the “prairie-chicken dance” – both the actual mating dance of the prairie-chicken and the “Native interpretation” by Isaiah Stewart – took Jason out on the southwest Kansas prairie one chilly March morning in order to photograph the 30-year old dancer. “It was only about 17 degrees out that day, Isaiah was a pro”, says Jason.
