Kristina Krug photographs "The Women of Magdalene: intimate portraits of recovery from sexual abuse, prostitution, and drug addiction.
"They have come off the street, where they've been addicted to drugs and/or alcohol, homeless, lived in abandoned buildings, even slept in piles of trash. They've been abused, stabbed, shot, raped, and found themselves trapped in the cycle of criminal prostitution. I want to understand what got them there in the first place. What chain of events led them to a prison filled with addiction, denial, and self-loathing. Most have been abused, raped, or molested, and were lost in an unimaginable existence of using their bodies to support an addiction, and getting high to desensitize themselves from such an abject reality."
