Maryland Life Magazine has commissioned photographer John Spaulding to shoot a series on the Chesapeake Bay 'deadrise,' a work boat with a unique hull design that has long been the staple of the Chesapeake Bay watermen's work fleet.
Many of these are now being converted to pleasure boats - or rotting in the water - as the Bay's crab and oyster industries are in decline.
John mentioned his interest in the boats to the editor of Maryland Life Magazine and, a few weeks later, the editor, Shannon Morgan, responded with an offer of a commission.
