100 Artists Contribute Original Art & Prints to Raise Money for Haiti

One hundred artists donated original drawings, paintings, collages and prints to be sold to raise money for Doctors Without Borders in the wake of the earthquake that devastated Haiti.

Otto Steininger was one of the 100 artists invited by David Plunkert to participate in this benefit for the work of Doctors Without Borders in Haiti. While there was no further direction by Dave other than contributing a drawing of a head to this group show, inevitably Otto thought of doing something that expresses the unfathomable agony of this catastrophe.

"Drawing on my lifelong passion for typography I started by moving letters around the page and quickly arrived at the possibility of using the two " i " dots of "Haiti" as a a pair of eyes. The rest just fell into place", says Steininger.

"Pourquoi Haiti?", is French (the lingua franca of Haiti) and means "Why Haiti?".

"Why on earth did it happen there, to this people? It becomes a philosophical question that divides people into those who seek consolation in their faith and those who start doubting the existence of God. The latter happened for the first time in the history of Christianity on a larger scale when in 1755 the center of Lisbon was annihilated by a combination of a massive earthquake, tsunami and a subsequent conflagration" Steininger comments.

Other contributing artists included Joyce Hesselberth, Luba Lukova, Aaron Meshon, Ken Orvidas, Dave Plunkert, Edel Rodriguez, Gina Triplett and more.

The exhibit opened this past Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the SPUR GALLERY 3504 ASH ST BALTIMORE MD.

The Original Art and Group Poster prints that did not sell at the gallery event will be available for purchase online for one month after the opening. Click on the Online store below for more info.
