In 1990, after buying a PC clone from a neighbor, Caesar Lima began merging photography with
computers, his dream being "to retouch and change colors on the system, doing all the effects
after the shoot." Ten years later, Lima has an extensive international client list,
recently doing everything from a Pioneer DVD ad, to a catalog cover for Sharp Europe,
to a CD cover for Capitol Records. "The trick to doing a wide range of subjects is maintaining a look, a visual signature throughout my work," says Lima. "It doesn't matter if I'm photographing a model or a telephone, you can still tell that I shot it." Accomplishments you're most proud of:
I told my clients that I had a full operational studio, when in reality, it was a garage that I turned into a studio. I didn't have air conditioning, so it was very uncomfortable in the summer. To reduce the heat, I bought a lot of fans. The good news was that it cooled the place down. The bad news was that it made it very windy. How would you describe your style? Very modern, colorful, and dreamy. Tools of the trade? Computers: 1 G4 (1 GB of RAM), 3 G3's (528 MB RAM), 2 Power Macs (256 MB RAM), 4 Powerbooks, 2 iMacs, 1 iBook. Digital cameras: 1 DCS 460 Kodak, 1 D1 Nikon, a Photophase scanning back. Agfa Duo Scan, Fuji MX 270 dig-camera, Sinar P1, Fuji 6x8, Nikon F4, and Pentax 6x7. Was there a particular image that you saw as a kid, something that inspired you to pursue a career in photo design? Marilyn Monroe lying on top of that red velvet sheet.
Where do you see the future of photography going? Totally digital and using film only for backup purposes. Computers will get faster and smaller and they will disappear. They will get so small they will be part of the camera. The only thing you will need will be a wireless flat monitor to display images. All image deliveries will be done through super fast internet connection. What's the most satisfying part of your job? Creating the visuals that make people want something. I love the challenge of telling a story without words.
