What's the story behind the cover and overall design?
Christer Manning: "I've done art direction on the last three Gov't Mule albums, including last year's 4 CD box set & interactive CD-ROM, so I had a pretty good handle on what they were looking for.  For starters, we had a really great photo shoot with Danny Clinch in an old abandoned men's club in downtown Manhattan. He shot on four different floors, each with a very different vibe, but all of which had a kind of faded, tarnished glory. Danny's photos were used for band portraits and some incidentals on the interior of the package.

For the cover, we wanted to retain the gritty "insane asylm feel" and color scheme that Danny achieved in his photos. I was familiar with Rich's work from his Fat Brain ads, and felt he had the type of mysterious, raw sensibility that would mesh well with the 'Life Before Insanity' concept.  He did all the photography on the cover and everything related to the illustration. We started off in that direction, using one of Rich's custom made sculptural heads and put it in an environment that reflected the mood in Danny's photos. I also liked Rich's frequent use of 'technological debris' -- wires, mechanical parts, etc.  Rich came up with the idea of a wind-up head being driven by a little figure.  I think it really adds to the 'loss of control' feeling implied by the title."

How did you create the cover image?
Rich Borge: "A combination of materials were used, including plexiglass, wire, wood, epoxy, plasticene, paint and a Mac.  After the sketches were approved, I built the object (head/driver) and set, then photographed it with a 4x5 camera, scanned the transparencies and worked on it in Photoshop."

What's your favorite album cover of all time?
CM: "Wow, that's a tough one.  If you asked me when I was like, 16, I probably would have said something like ELP's "Tarkus" or anything by Roger Dean."
