Member Spotlight - Colby Lysne

[ September 14th, 2006 ]   Photographer, Colby Lysne based in Kansas City, MO was born and raised in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Lysne moved to Kansas City to pursue a career in photography and design. After working as creative director with an online company he realized that making images was his greatest passion. He has been involved in professional photography ever since.

Lysne takes inspiration from contrasts in geography, uniqueness of individual situations and observations of the human condition. His images combine situation and mood with lighting and composition to create a "stolen moment" quality.

How did you get from majoring in biology to graduating with a degree in photography / design and a career as a freelance photographer?
Basically it was a process of elimination. I didn't have exposure to the arts where I grew up so I was unaware of my potential in that area. I thought if I couldn't draw or paint then I couldn't create. I went from a subject I am interested in (wildlife biology) to discovering something I am passionate about.

Higher education - is it necessary for a professional photographer?
I believe it is. It is just the kind of commitment that you need to begin your journey in taking your passion seriously. In my case it gave me the time to experiment and refine my technique - as well as understanding my commitment to vision.

I've watched your book go from a collection of really different work in the early stages to the focused package I see now - any concerns about someone borrowing this style?
You know, someone can copy my arrangements and settings but that isn't what I consider my marketable assets. The mechanics of shooting are obvious to the experienced eye - it is my perspective that makes my work original. No one can copy that - it comes from a ton of shooting and a commitment to my vision and perspective.

Speaking of your style, how would you define it?
That's a tough one. I think there are a couple ways to answer that one. First, I would have to say I use my subject matter and setting to determine how I will shoot something. I put a great deal of energy into making things just this side of real or authentic. I like to take a situation and see what is interesting about it - then I exploit that. Second, I like to leave room for spontaneity and/or creativity.

What is the greatest sacrifice you made to get to where you are in your career?
Money-time-sanity.

Any advice for up and comers?
Cast off all other options, it's the only way.
