Member Spotlight - Brian Minnich

[June 16, 2008 ]

Brian Minnich is the fastest man in the universe. A world class log roller, a professional insomniac and a wine aficionado trained by Baccus, himself. Brian has always viewed the world in his very own sui generis way. Schooled in surfing at a prestigious Institute, yes, he was institutionalized, Brian has not only mastered excellent technical skills but has also discovered the key to great client relationships, the art of the 'bribe'. His goal now is to show up and push the button. What you see is what you get.....if you close one eye, that is.

Brian believes that prints aren't heavy, images are...Explore the work! Open 24 hours!

What do you feel is the most important trait a photographer needs in order to be successful?
Timing. Timing with shots. Timing with marketing. Timing with spotting trends.

What is the heart & soul of Brian Minnich Photography Inc?
I have circled back to instinct and intuition, and away from automation and the instant edit. I use older traditional style cameras, many without view finders. I immerse myself into a scene, (real and produced), sometimes color sometimes B&W, all with the intent of a making the viewer feel the intimacy of the scene as part of the scene.

What do you love to shoot?
I am inspired by the subject, story and concept. I like to create imagery with a sense of place that tells a story and has multiple layers. I want the viewer to end up with more questions than answers.

What are some of the favorite awards and accolades you have achieved?
Our work with VSA Partners New York has been selected to be in the Permanent Collection of the AIGA Design Archives at the Denver Art Museum; As well as, having won a place in the 2008 '365:AIGA Annual Design Competition 29'. We have been included in PRINT Magazine's 2007 Design Annual with our self promo piece "Chicago". This is the same piece that received a full page in the International Communication Arts Design Annual in 2006. As a result of these accolades I was chosen to judge the 2008 AAF Triad Addys. We placed twice in the Photography Masters Cup International Color Awards 2007. We were featured in American Photography as one of 23 photographers in the world to be showcased in 2007. We placed first in the 2006 APA Atlanta Portfolio Review; As well as having been featured in the 2006 Art Director's Club of NYC Review.

We were chosen and are showing with LensModern of the UK in their fine art galleries and international ads.

Have you been in a situation where you had only 5 minutes to set-up, shoot & wrap?
Constantly! Moments are fleeting. Some jobs are prepped, shot, and wrapped in a 250th of a second. I strive for a non-manufactured "moment" look in all of my work even when there is a lot of preproduction. It is because of proper preproduction that the actual shoot time can be quite minimized.

With the success & numerous awards won by your newspaper promo piece will you do another?
Yes! We are working on it now! Look out for "Where there's smoke...".

What are you planning for the next 5 years?
Fame, fortune, & higher gas prices.
