Vintage Travel Poster Series

This illustration is the second in the series of proposed CD music cover portraits called "20 portraits in 40 days". The concept is really a justification for creating some fun illustrations of famous people. In this image I shifted to a more minimalist graphic style that contained only flat bold colors. My inspirations were the art of Doug Johnson, Daniel Pelavin, Peter Max, and most of all, Siggi Eggertsson, a wonderful illustrator who was born in Iceland and now works in London creating an endless array of inventive images and designs.

Who is Lupe Fiasco? I really did not know when I chose him as a subject for portrait number 4 in my series called "20 portraits in 40 days." As it turns out he is pretty good rap artist with a smooth sound. I just loved the name and the challenge of capturing his likeness in a geometric style. This is portrait number four in my Memorial Day weekend illustration marathon. I am shifting my color palette on each work to explore different harmonies and tonal relationships. A bold black shape is always the first element I begin with, adding color only after this first visual element creates a satisfactory design.

Jessi J. "Price Tag" music video inspired this portrait of the vivacious high energy singer and rising star. Now that I am familiar with her music I here it everywhere. Changed my style a bit on this portrait to adjust to the exaggerated expression on her face. The very pale skin tones required using carefully chosen shapes and tonal shifts to describe the structure of her face. The eyes were especially important to get right and required a bit of trial and error in defining the eyelashes. This image is getting the most views on Imagekind where i show my work.

Just can't get enough Jessi J.--what can I say. I wanted to capture the aggressive quality of here music in this portrait and the playful lyrics. This one is portrait number six in my series "20 portraits in 40 days."

Now I know the music of this artist. My ipod is loaded with about everything he has ever recorded. A real virtuoso talent. I wanted to do a portrait of Mayer and this front on view showed his melancholy personality and deep gaze.It also came together more effortlessly than any of the portraits I have created so far in this series and is the forth so far in five days. I chose a monochromatic color palette with a hint of violet to complement the beige and yellow ochre hues. I am fairly satisfied with portrait number 7.

Chris Brown was interesting subject for a portrait number 5 in my series 20 portraits in 40 days." He seems as much businessman as rapper in the photos of him. He wears glasses and when he has a suit on he seems like he could be an accountant at a Fortune 500 company. He will probably be worth as much as one of those companies before he is done. I returned to a more geometric style with this portrait. The brown and blue hues are restrained but still take advantage of complimentary color contrast to give the illustration some tension and energy to match the sharp corners and hard shapes.

From my project called "20 portraits in 40 days." This subject just blew me away. Although the likeness may be harder to see, the subject was impossible to resist. Lighting is everything in a portrait and in this graphic style shapes and forms must be defined with clean edges and fine attention to details. The eyes are everything. No black in this one-only a deep electric blue to define the hair and shadows around the eye.

Charlotte Church seemed like a good choice for portrait number 11 for my portrait project called "20 portraits in 40 days". with her pale complexion and deep green eyes.

John Coltrane playing a bass clarinet. This Coltrane portrait was number 12 in my project called "20 portraits in 40 days." I am engaging in a bit of reductivism, finding more minimalist ways to portray the subject here. Jazz suggests a more abstract approach, especially Coltrane's music causing me to limit my color palette and reduce the forms to geometric shapes. Note the instrument Coltrane is playing in this illustration. After a little research it appears the instrument is a bass clarinet which accounts for the high hand positions and the black body color. In all, he was expert with the Tenor, soprano, and alto saxophone, and bass clarinet-and of course, he was a genius. I may alter this illustration a bit to describe the clarinet's structure better, especially the bottom section which has small up turn.

Portrait number 13 in the project "20 portraits in 40 days". Miles Davis is a natural subject for a graphic style. I sampled colors from the "Bitches Brew" and "Kind of Blue"album covers from the seventies to get the color palette and simply improvised from there. The eyes are unbelievable-like a cat's in this dark lighting.

Portrait completed for Digital Design Magazine. Will run as a tutorial in the next issue. It is portrait number 19 in my project called "20 portraits in 40 days".

Michael Shannon as GENERAL ZOD from the “Man of Steel”. This is the first section of a poster I am painting for the The Man of Steel.

I turned on a western starring Jimmy Stewart while working on this poster. Within one minute I realized the entire film was shot in Sedona with a dramatic battle sequence right under Bell Rock. Bell Rock is one of the most unique formations in the Sedona area and sits at the north end of the village of Oak Creek. Its always tricky trying to find an original way to approach a very iconic subject. The rock is really this red in the Arizona sunlight.

This view of Cathedral Rock from Red Rock Park in Sedona forms the design for my third poster in this series for CANYONLANDS. I am building these at full size with the idea of marketing them as national park travel posters.

Verde Valley is called Arizona’s other Grand Canyon. I thought it would be interesting to do something with the two “V” letters in the name. That v shape actually appears when you look out from the edge of the Mongollon Plateau. This was designed to work as a companion poster for the Sedona illustration.

I had the opportunity to create the line art for the Jeep Brand Catalogues for 2016. It was a fun project that required developing a digital woodcut/etched style. This Cherokee Cover is featured on LinkedIn.

I completed a spread illustration for dbusiness magazine's April issue which just came out this week. It was a cool concept based on the second TRON movie and features some Star Wars style type. I replaced the cycles with cars because it is Detroit after all.

Coltrane in Blue is a 45 minute speed painting created for my students as a demonstration.

With this Hugh Masekela example I am giving a tutorial in digital painting techniques in class this week and created a some 1 hour studies using the grisaille technique of painting black and white and then adding color.

Jimi Hendrix on Fire is the third speed painting from the series this week. Each music artist is painted to show the energy and passion of their performance.

APBA award mural vector illustration. My fourth mural this year for the Stevie Awards in collaboration with The Core Group features a lightbulb theme to symbolize innovation in business and industry. We tried to fit in as many kinds of light bulbs as possible into this design. The participating countries below are represented by the word INNOVATION in the language of the culture. Indonesia, China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam.

A 20 ft mural design and digital illustration created for ABA award event. My final mural illustration for 2019. At 20 feet and completed in two and one half weeks this project was just a bit of work I would say.

My first mural art of 2020 rendered in Illustrator. No changes from the client! A cool style with bright contrasting colors in flat tones. I definitely know how to ender buildings now.

The mural shows the interconnections between HR employees. The client wanted the orange and blue theme with gears for this particular awards event. The employee workflow is is represented in the spoke and hub design

Low Clouds at Sunset is part of the editorial series "Men of the High Plains." This is an imagined landscape in northern Arizona. I was inspired by the clouds over Wattles Road last year as a rugged sky was sliding across the western horizon at sunset. I added the sun, the butts, and the river valley.

Wolf Robe Portrait is part of the editorial series "Men of the High Plains." Wolf Robe was a Southern Cheyenne chief and a holder of the Benjamin Harrison Peace Medal.

The series so far. I am probably going to add figures like Samuel Clemens as well to this set. I love working with historical photos from the nineteenth century.

1957 Chevy 3100 This is my latest in my landscape series I started in 2016 in the style of Eyvind Earle. Shifting my focus to cars again combining the new style with car rendering. I think the marriage worked fairly well between this 1957 Chevy 3100 and the stylized landscape approach.

1964 Short Bed Custom Half-Ton Pickup Poster number two in this series. This cream colored pickup featured red accents and those fantastic spherical wheels. Next up, a visit to the 1970s. These illustrations are part of my fine art collection available at FineArtAmerica.

1971 CHEVROLET C10 CHEYENNE FLEETSIDE 2WD PICKUP Number three in this Chevy Truck Series. This is a model I remember from my childhood. Love that classic 1970's styling. These poster illustrations are created entirely in Adobe Illustrator-no touch up in Photoshop, so all the depth has to be created in vector.

1980-CHEVY TRUCK Custom-C10-Short-Bed 350 v8 Moving on to the 1980's with this one. A study in blue. I try to explore a different color palette with each artwork using the body color of the model for inspiration. This is a completely vector illustration created in Adobe Illustrator.

This series for Game of Thrones combines my vector style with textural elements to create a new look. Each portrait will be rendered first in vector as a complete portrait and then re-worked in Photoshop to become a hybrid illustration.

This is a recent commission for LEAR Corporation to create an Art Wall Mural 8'X8' in a clean ink style for a company event.

Roy is so explosive that containing him within this restrained graphical language was difficult. He seems to want to burst out of the design.

This portrait of Billie is a continuation of the style I developed on the Coltrane portrait. I am continuing with reductivism, finding more minimalist ways to portray the subject here. Holiday's silky voice and restrained power are conveyed well with this limited color palette and language of enclosing right angles.

For this year Women in Business mural illustration I was asked to reflect on the new normal of business in our times by showing women as heroes. Our primary inspiration was the current Captain Marvel played by Brie Larson. We wanted to create a design that showed women in business from a heroic confident point of view reflecting the same bold self confident roles that Marvel and DC Comics have given to many if the classic female superhero characters in recent films.
