Ken Orvidas Portrays An American Folk Legend

Nov 07, 2016

The latest work of illustrator Ken Orvidas is dedicated to an American folk legend: Johnny Appleseed. Born to the name John Chapman in September 1774 (almost exactly 242 years ago), Johnny would become the major introducer of apple trees in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, West Virginia and Ontario (Canada). Ken’s illustration of the American pioneer is a new entry to the series, “Myths, Fables and Fantastical Tales”, and will, according to Ken, fit under the latter part of the title, since Johnny was a real, historical person. Though not sure about the exact details of his life, Ken also jokingly added that perhaps Johnny Appleseed coined the phrase, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”.
