About The Exhibition:
Bodies is the first time exhibiting work together for German twin sisters Hanna and Franziska Barczyk. The focus of the sisters’ work is the emotional and physical state of the human body. Its shape and form is portrayed in their work through bold, vibrant images that evoke the body at rest, at play, and in passionate interplay with its environment. The view experiences how the same unifying theme, the human form, is portrayed by identical twin sisters with similar, yet different, life experiences.

The fusion of emotional and conceptual themes is not new to Hanna. Her ongoing, award-winning, editorial work for publications such as The New York Times, The New Yorker and many others, regularly portray the human body succumbing to issues we often must confront, from sex, violence, and politics, to war, poverty and death.

Franziska’s work, which is more geometric in form, reveals tensions between the body and it’s environment. Bold patterns, shapes, and a unique arrangement of colour bring the viewer into a world that is at once foreign yet familiar. Similar graphics and themes can be found in Franziska’s vibrant editorial illustrations as well. They deal with themes such as relationships, women’s issues, and modern life, and are regularly featured in publications such as Nylon magazine, Lena Dunham’s Lenny Letter, and animations in The New York Times.
