Smale Shoots Groundbreaking Technology at Microsoft Research Labs

Feb 06, 2017

Photographer Brian Smale recently had an opportunity to shoot Microsoft researcher, Ethan Jackson, and his team at work for a special feature on Microsoft’s official website. The photoshoot took place in (what Brian claims to be) “the incredibly cool” Microsoft Research labs, and was focused on the building of a new, high-tech “mosquito trap”.

Using machine learning, the trap is designed to only catch certain species of mosquito, including ones that carry diseases such as Zika, Dengue Fever and West Nile Virus, while collecting data about when it was captured and under which weather conditions. This, researchers believe, will help local health authorities around the world predict when an outbreak of named diseases is imminent and hopefully help them prepare accordingly.

More information about the project, called “Project Premonition”, can be found in the link at the bottom of the page, along with Allison Linn’s full article.
