When photographer George Kamper was called up recently to be offered a new and exciting project, it wasn’t just by anyone, but by his friend and former model Stency Wegman — one of George’s two leading models from his early career life in Upstate New York (the other one, incidentally, was Sherryl Kamper, whom George ended up marrying).
Stency, who launched her yoga line (Stency Apparel Collection) together with Wegmans Markets a couple of years ago, wanted George to give the photography of her latest collection a fresh, new look and continue the approach of keeping classes, wardrobe and DVD’s accessible for the average yoga consumer, as well as for Wegman’s own employees. To do this, George traveled to Jamaica, where he and his team (including local photographer Alan Smith, who was hired specifically to assist on the job) visited a number of beautiful locations to be used as simple and inspiring backgrounds. While Stency, who is a long-time yoga veteran and the face of the collection, was the model for all the photos, George’s wife Sherryl helped in watching out for the wardrobe and making sure that all of the poses were hit correctly.
Providing some additional details about the shoot, George says, “we also relied on additional locals to help pull chairs and plywood to create a platform overlooking the water. We alternated between strobes and available lighting with sunbounces to create the look depending upon the position of the sun and time of day.”
