Dancing the Waltz to The Blue Danube

Jan 28, 2021

Julia Kerschbaumer's recent personal piece "The Blue Danube“ by Richard Strauss Jr. is not only part of Julia's culture and deeply connected to her New Year's Eve tradition, but it is also a great masterpiece of classical music that sends a pleasant shiver down her spine every time she hears it.

"In Austria, at midnight on New Year's Eve, this beautiful waltz is played on the radio and television, and almost everyone dances the waltz. Every New Year's morning, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra plays the New Year's Concert, which is broadcast around the world from the famous Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. Their last piece (before the encore of the Radetzky March) is always "The Blue Danube", accompanied by a beautiful show by the Vienna State Ballet", comments Kerschbaumer.

At the 2021 New Year's concert Riccardo Muti conductor of the Viennese said:

„(…) So my message to the governments and presidents and prime ministers everywhere in every part of the world: consider culture always as one of the primary elements to have a better society in the future. With this message, we will play now the famous Blue Danube. And I hope that on the waves of this beautiful music full of joy and sadness, life, that we can hope for a better year.“
