Francesca Mannocchi, here illustrated by Altpick member Ivan Canu, is an Italian freelance journalist who has covered wars and the migration crisis in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Turkey, Libya, and the Balkans for media and news outlets such as Al Jazeera, Stern and RAI-3, among many others. She is also the receiver of the Premiolino, Italy’s most important journalistic award.
The wonderful portrait recently accompanied an interview of Mannocchi by writer Paolo Bricco in Il Sole 24 Ore. The feature has since been mentioned by Mannocchi herself, who recalls: “We talked about poetry, my beloved neighborhood, the smell of basil, ginger and the thousand shades of White”. She also made sure to thank Ivan for the portrayal, which she said gives voice and color to her “always upside down smile”.
