An Artist is His Own Worst Critic

Apr 01, 2021

“An artist is his own worst critic”, as someone put it after Ray-Mel Cornelius shared his thoughts on one of his latest drawings.

As with anything newly created, there’s always something new to be learned and the created piece does not only have to be an end-product. As for this particular artwork, the piece was part of an "art postcard" exchange, and there were a few things that bugged (pun possible intended) Ray-Mel; “I noticed the outlines of the clouds aren't waterproof like the black ink is”, he said when sharing the image, “so I ran a line of water over them to see what would happen. I'm not sure I like the results that much but they do look a bit softer than they did just as outlines. I'm also not happy with the lowest cloud and the way the machine's landing gear fits right where the cloud dips. It looks kind of awkward. Anyway, I like most of the rest of it. I hope the recipient of this one does.”

We do as well, Ray-Mel!
