UNPA Issues New Stamp to Celebrate The Year of the Tiger

Feb 03, 2022

Happy Lunar New Year! - UN stamps celebrate the Chinese Lunar Calendar - Year of the Tiger

The new lunar year officially begins on 1 February 2022 and ends on 21 January 2023. The year 2022 marks the start of a new zodiac cycle for the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA), as UNPA completed the entire Chinese zodiac cycle of twelve animals in 2021. For this new cycle, UNPA is debuting a new sheet design and format. The ten $1.30 denominated stamps feature an illustration of a Tiger and the tabs to the left of each stamp have the UN logo design. The stamp sheets may be personalized by using photos to replace the UN logo design.

Under the guidance and art direction of Sergio Baradat, the stamps and the background design of the sheet were illustrated by Tiger Pan (China). Mr. Pan also illustrated the Chinese Lunar Calendar series in 2018 for the “Year of the Dog”.

The Tiger is the third animal in the zodiac cycle. According to legend, the Tiger was confident that no one could compete with its speed and vigor for the celestial race that would decide the order of the zodiacs. However, when Tiger climbed out of the river, thinking it was first, it was informed that Rat placed first for its cunning and Ox placed second for its diligence. This left the king of the jungle having to settle for third place. It has been said that people born in the years of the Tiger are vigorous and ambitious, daring and courageous, enthusiastic and generous, self-confident with a sense of justice and a commitment to help others for the greater good.
