This image is the book cover for The Tale Teller, by Susan Glickman. In the autumn of 1738, a young Frenchman disembarks at Quebéc harbor and is detained by port officials. The officials’ distrust proves warranted when their captive is revealed to be in disguise: he is actually a young woman, Esther Brandeau. When interrogated about her history, Esther relates fantastic tales. Esther must conceal her Jewish identity because Jews are prohibited from entering New France. But not even she realizes the power her tale-telling will have.
