Duke’s new Center for Onco-Primary Care is changing cancer care. When a person is diagnosed with cancer, they often disappear into intense treatment at a cancer center and don’t see a primary care physician for years. When the patient emerges, their regular physician has no idea how the cancer treatment may have affected their overall health. This has been deemed the cancer care “black hole”. The Duke Cancer Institute is fixing this problem. The Duke Center for Onco-Primary Care links primary care physicians with the cancer care teams in caring for the patients before, during and after cancer even until end of life.
