Pope Depicts Struggle of Black Voters In Florida for Orlando Sentinel

Nov 09, 2020

A powerful, brand-new illustration by illustrator Rich Pope can currently be seen on the cover of Orlando Sentinel, Orlando’s primary newspaper.

The artwork accompanies an article by writer Desiree Stennett on Florida’s history with suppressing black votes and how black voters still face difficulties to this day. The image specifically harkens back to the tragic fate of Orlando-citizen July Perry, who in 1920 was lynched by a white mob while attempting to vote, sparking the Ocoee Massacre, the largest recorded episode of Election Day Violence in U.S. history.
