A word from Photographer Robert Houser

Nov 12, 2021

Almost monthly I set up test shoots - typically to try an idea that I have rolling around in my head, or a new light or camera toy. This month, I decided to go crazy and schedule a full day of shooting, bringing in multiple models and trying a bunch of ideas. We shot in the studio, on my glass table, at a pool, and also on a trampoline in my outdoor shooting space. It didn't help that it happened to fall on a day with steady 20 mph winds, gusting to 30. Here's a few all shot on the same day.

How did we shoot it? The glass shots were done with available light through a large silk - held by my assistant in the crazy wind. For the pool shot, we rigged a 20'x20' silk and frame over the entire pool - covered in sandbags. I submerged myself just outside the shadow of the silk so that I could get some sunlit air bubbles in the foreground to add mood. The dance shot was the biggest challenge because of the wind. We had 18' x 15' of black fabric up on high rollers behind the dancer, but it was flapping like a flag on a flagpole. Between gusts, she did the leap with handfuls of flour mixed with granulated sugar.
