Is the U.S. getting a prolonged winter or an early spring? Well, according to Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog, it’s the latter. Phil emerged from his burrow and did not see his shadow (i.e. the sign of an approaching early spring by Pennsylvania Dutch tradition) around the same time that photographer Keith Barraclough and his partner Kate arrived at the Miss America Diner in Jersey City, NJ.
At first glance, the diner did not seem to live up to its glamorous name. Keith notes: “There was nothing glitzy about it, not even an accent of pink or sparkles in sight. But tucked underneath the counter was a tiara in disguise: a veteran’s cowboy boots.”
