In the new issue of Scientific American Mark Smith's illustrations were created for an article about Sand Mafias who are stealing sand from Moroccan beaches (among other areas) to facilitate the current construction boom around the globe. Corrupt officials are turning a blind eye to the practice, and the violence that comes with it.
