ABOUT THE DESIGNER AND ARTIST
As a child growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I was mostly exposed to my parents’ creative friends. We lived up in ...the mountains, about 40 miles east of Seattle in a house we build with a large studio. My father had many friends that would come over to discuss the future of events in the art world and talk about books in the making. Most were poets, writers, musicians, painters and designers. I would listen to their conversations and watch them work. We traveled every year to a new destination and my father would make friends and invite them to come and stay with us. We would always have a visitor from some other country staying for a while. My Father was also a teacher and would invite students to stay over for Thanksgiving or Christmas holiday. He mostly worked from home so when I got home from school, I would run up to his studio to paint or watch him work. At one point, he opened a design studio downtown Seattle, I remember making stats on his stat camera and almost burning myself on the lamps. I would stand on a chair, designing, away the camera would flash. At the age of 16, I remember telling my father I wanted to go to Art Center College of Design, the college he had gone too, he was happy with that but told me I needed to study first in Seattle and understand what design was. I attended night classes at the University of Washington for drawing, and day classes at Seattle Central Advertising department where my father and many of his friends taught. After getting my Associate of Arts degree there, I applied to ACCD and got a scholarship at the age of 20.
