The Best Record Store in Town

Aug 18, 2014

It wasn't all scenic vistas, glaciers, lava fields and waterfalls for me in the land of fire and ice...I also carved out a time for a few portraits on the last day. Here is the third of three portraits I set out to make on my last day in Reykjavik. While we were out exploring around the Vatnajökull glacier (yes, that Vatnajökull glacier that now may have a volcano erupting or about to erupt underneath it), my friend Thomas Campbell pointed out that the best record store in town, 12 12 Tónar (that we visited on our very first day upon arrival in Iceland), had came in #2 on Buzzfeeds "27 breathtaking record stores you have to visit before you die."

Armed with that info, I made getting a proper portrait of the owners, Jóhannes Ágústsson and Lárus Jóhannesson, high on my priority list when we were back from the countryside. They were fantastic to work with and I already have some more and better ideas for another portrait when I return again involving their story and a chess board.
Check out the list - I doubt anyone has been to as many of these stores as Bill Frakes!

And it should be known that this record store isn't just a one hit wonder, last year Gramophone magazine called it the best record store in the world. So there you go. Not shabby.
