Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park Wins Water Rights

May 20, 2009

Charles E. Carstensen is not only passionate about preserving the beauty of the Black Canyons of Colorado through his lens, but in the courts.

After a 36 year water fight in the Colorado water courts, The National Park Service, has won water rights for 25 parks in nine Western states. This week an annual release of 7500 cubic feet per second of water started to flow on May 14, 2009. The Bureau of Reclamation and the National Park Service now have the water rights to bring the extra release to fruition. This will scour the canyon with an additional 5 feet of water thereby helping the ecology.
