Twenty-Five years ago this month, when Texas Monthly was just a quarter century old itself, @djpentagram asked Brian Smale to photograph Ponce Kiah Marchelle Heloise Cruse Evans, also known to millions of her fans simply as: ‘Heloise’.
Her mother (Heloise Bowles) started a newspaper column in 1959, in the Honolulu Advertiser, dispensing helpful advice to homemakers. The column was acquired by King Features, changed its name to “Hints from Heloise”, and syndicated across the USA.
When her mother died in 1977, Ponce took over the column and continues writing it (and 11 books!) as ‘Heloise' ever since, for Good Housekeeping, and at Heloise.com.
