ACADIA Maine is the first in a six part series of fine art prints created for Quiltfolk Magazine. I acted as the designer and art directed as well as illustrated each artwork that celebrates a landscape from a different region of the country. The art is conceived through the lens of quilt design patterns.

Pixel Weather, "The Inlet"

This illustration is based on any number of inlets along the coast of Lake Michigan. The mood almost tells a story. This is what happens when a new style is evolving and suddenly takes a leap forward. It's a little bit Wizard of Oz, and little bit of the American painters Grant Wood, and Brett Allen Johnson. Definitely an American style.

Bell Rock Arizona

Part of my National Parks Series. I turned on a western starring Jimmy Stewart while working on this poster. Within one minute I realized the entire film was shot in Sedona with a dramatic battle sequence right under Bell Rock. Bell Rock is one of the most unique formations in the Sedona area and sits at the north end of the village of Oak Creek. Its always tricky trying to find an original way to approach a very iconic subject. The rock is really this red in the Arizona sunlight.

Badlands National Park poster commission for Quiltfolk Magazine

Badlands South Dakota is the second in a six part series of fine art prints created for Quiltfolk Magazine. The second in my series for Quiltfolk features the Badlands of South Dakota. An already very abstract landscape, the Badlands lent themselves to the geometric design of a quilt inspired pattern. Of course I had to include a buffalo.

Olympic National Park Washington State for Quiltfolk Magazine features a misty landscape bathed by the Pacific at sunset. The ocean waves roll toward a lighthouse with killer whales swimming by in a display of marine life.

Pixel Weather, "Break in the Clouds"

There is a small lake behind the dunes at Saugatuck State Park that I always photograph when we are there walking along the dune path. This artwork depicts early fall showers cascading over the dunes and moving inland allowing a shaft of sunlight to illuminate a group of trees starting their fall turn.

Thinking of quilts and cubists on this design as I tried to re-create that feeling of late October light as the leaves are in full turn. Opening Up

"Opening Up"features the Statue of Liberty in the New York City harbor for Quiltfolk Magazine. This work is informally dedicated to all our first responders. My first print of our 2020 series on Quilted American Landmarks. I sketched out this design back on March 12 just as we were shutting down to shelter at home. I had no idea then how much the world would be changed in the next eight weeks. Seems appropriate that this design is the first in the series to be released this year.

Silent Night Winter Jack Pine Rabbit

Self Promotion Series featured in 3x3 Magazine. I picked a good subject for a truly wintery Christmas night of 2022 along the shores of Lake Michigan. Only a random rabbit in its full winter coat might be out in the bitter cold of a Michigan Jack Pine forest on a night like this.

It's all about the mood. This art is loosely based on an unusual place where the high plateaus are topped with black stone. I find it liberating to create my own unique landforms, although this pinnacle does roughly follow the form of an actual landmark.

This composition was created from memory after reviewing several photos I took on our raft ride down the river. I like the freedom that constructing art from memory provides as opposed to following a specific image. This scene more fully represents the feeling of the canyon than my photos.

I have been working with textures over the last year for auto graphics and use them to enhance and enrich tones when effective-something I teach students in my 2180 Concept Illustration course. Smoky Mountains Clingmans Dome Tennessee. This composition for Quiltfolk Magazine explores the effects of light and shadow as the sun rises over the mountains. Fog caught in the folds of the ridges is pushed out by the morning breeze as rays of sunlight glance down into the valleys.

Sometimes making art becomes a process of reduction down to essential elements. Whatever does not contribute to the whole must be discarded leaving only the essence of a place. This is what the Painted Desert in Arizona felt like just before a blood red sun set in the west as we drove home to our hotel.

SEDONA/VERDE VALLEY Concepts

Verde Valley is called Arizona’s other Grand Canyon. I thought it would be interesting to do something with the two “V” letters in the name. That v shape actually appears when you look out from the edge of the Mongollon Plateau. This was designed to work as a companion poster for the Sedona illustration.
